| Acurian’s mission is to help researchers find a cure for everything from cancer to anxiety disorders. Since 1998 the company has helped recruit and enroll thousands of patients in clinical trials for more than 60 pharmaceutical and biotech companies representing over 3,000 research sites. The company's website allows interested patients to register and indicate interest in over 2,000 ongoing clinical trials. The company also develops software to help contract research organizations (CROs) manage and track the results of clinical trials.
At any given time Acurian manages 30,000 to 40,000 patients through their respective clinical trials. With so many patients under management simultaneously, Acurian was looking to cut the costs involved in keeping patients informed and ensuring every CRO trial runs to completion smoothly. Their management team saw speech automation as the best way to do this. In particular, they wanted to automate outbound survey calls that check in with patients currently participating in a trial.

Once the caller’s identity is verified, the Survey Agent reminds the patient of a scheduled doctor appointment and provides the option to transfer directly to the doctor’s office. In addition, the Survey Agent may ask patients if they have been contacted by the doctor’s office and whether they have been scheduled for an appointment. The Survey Agent can also provide callers with and connect to an alternate site for the clinical trial if the one they have opted for is no longer available.
